Your first address in China: a no-signal navigation and translation backup

Make one destination card, not a folder of guesses

Ask your accommodation through its established booking channel for its Chinese property name, full street address, district, entrance description and contact number. Match these against your booking's city and branch. A hotel brand name alone is not enough to distinguish properties. Do not translate or reconstruct the official address from memory.

Save those details in one clearly labelled note and a screenshot. Add the reservation name and dates without exposing a passport scan or payment-card details. Keep a paper copy or another offline copy separate from the main phone. These are editorial resilience steps, not a promise that any particular driver will recognize an English hotel name.

Separate a saved pin from a usable offline route

Check a destination's location before departure and save an overview plus a close view of the entrance or nearby landmark. Treat the image as a reference for asking staff, not as live turn-by-turn navigation. A pin, screenshot or cached screen does not prove an entire route has been downloaded.

Apple documents offline maps in iOS 17 or later, but only in select areas; it also warns that an offline map for one region is not intended for use in all regions. Its instructions say to tap Download if the button is available, or use More and Download Map.^[2] For China, do not infer nationwide offline coverage from the presence of the feature elsewhere. Check your exact destination on your own device. If there is no download option, use the address packet instead of claiming an offline map is ready.

Download language support while you have a connection

Google's Android Translate help says downloaded languages can be translated without an internet connection. Select the language in the app and look for the download icon; if the icon is absent, that language cannot be downloaded. The help also notes that downloaded languages appear as Downloaded.^[3] Check the actual language options on your device rather than assuming all languages or camera features work offline.

As a preparation exercise, temporarily turn off network access and try a short, non-sensitive typed phrase in the language pair you plan to use. Re-enable connectivity afterwards. This is a test for the traveller to perform, not a test we have performed. Save a short request such as ‘Please help me find this hotel entrance’ alongside the verified address, so you can show both without composing a complex sentence on arrival.

When the map and the address disagree

Stop somewhere safe rather than following a doubtful pin into traffic or an unfamiliar access road. Compare the Chinese name, branch, street number and district with the booking. Show the destination card to staffed accommodation or transport information services, and ask them to confirm the location. If the property's own reply and a map pin disagree, resolve the discrepancy with the property before travelling farther.

If a connection is available, contact the property using its established number or booking channel. Without one, the printed or saved address still provides something concrete to show a person who can help. Do not hand an unlocked phone containing financial or identity documents to a stranger just to translate one line.

Keep the promise narrow

This guide does not rate Amap against Apple Maps, guarantee access to a foreign online service, or prescribe a VPN or SIM plan. No device, route or translation app was field-tested by us. The decision is simpler: use live routing when your actual setup supports it; otherwise fall back to a verified destination and human confirmation.
