Do not treat a failed online check-in as proof that your ticket is invalid—or as proof that it is valid. Verify the issued booking, then prepare an airport-counter fallback with your passport. Hainan Airlines lists passports for foreign travelers and offers a passport option on its online form; that is not a guarantee that every booking can check in online.[301][302] Check deadlines for your exact operating airline and airport, not a universal “domestic flights” cutoff.
1. Separate a website error from an unissued ticket
A traveler publicly described booking domestic Sichuan Airlines flights, receiving a reservation email, and then being unable to log into English online check-in. This is a search-excerpt demand signal, not a verified ticket or a rule about Sichuan Airlines.[306] The useful first decision is whether the problem is only check-in access or whether ticket issuance itself remains uncertain.
Our recommendation: save the passenger name, travel date, route, airline booking reference and electronic-ticket number if supplied. Ask the seller or airline to confirm that the ticket is issued and the flight remains booked if the record is unclear. Do not buy a duplicate flight merely because an app cannot display the reservation. Conversely, do not rely on a payment receipt alone when the airline cannot locate the booking.
2. Check the airline’s eligibility, not a blanket “foreigners cannot” claim
Hainan Airlines’ airport guide explicitly includes passports among foreign travelers’ valid identity documents. Its online form offers Passport, Identity Card and E-Ticket Number options, while excluding passengers traveling with infants and those requiring special services from online check-in.[301][302] A passport option establishes a published route, not successful validation of your particular nationality, name, ticket or phone number.
For an eligible ordinary booking, use the official form and match the requested fields to the actual ticket and passport. If the form fails, save the exact error privately and ask the airline which document or ticket-number route to use; do not replace your passport identity with a Chinese identity-card number you do not hold. Stop retrying before it consumes your airport travel buffer. These troubleshooting steps are editorial advice, not a tested workaround.
3. Route a codeshare question to the operating airline
Before choosing an app or counter, find the “operated by” airline on the itinerary, not only the airline code displayed beside the flight. Our recommendation is to ask that operator which counter or handling agent serves the departure, and to ask the ticket seller for any additional airline booking reference needed. A codeshare can make the seller, displayed flight code and aircraft operator different parts of the same booking.
Air China’s FAQ gives a specific exception to any simplistic “always use only the operator’s website” rule: it describes online check-in for Air China-operated flights and flights on which Air China shares its code with Shenzhen Airlines or Shandong Airlines. Its agency-ticket answer refers to CA electronic tickets without a ticket change.[303] Do not extend that listed arrangement to every codeshare partner, changed ticket or another airline’s website. If your operating carrier is outside the stated scope, ask it for the correct check-in channel rather than repeatedly entering a marketing flight number into an unsuitable form.
This guide does not establish a universal codeshare counter rule. Confirm the actual airport desk with the operator or airport, especially after a flight or terminal change. Keep ticket changes and refunds with the channel able to service the ticket; identifying an operating desk does not prove it can alter a third-party sale.
4. Use an exact airport cutoff—and arrive well before it
A concrete example, not a China-wide rule: Hainan Airlines’ May 1, 2026 notice moves its Guangzhou Baiyun operations to Terminal 3 from May 7. The notice gives a domestic check-in cutoff of 40 minutes before scheduled departure and a boarding-gate cutoff of 15 minutes before scheduled departure.[304] Reconfirm the terminal and any newer notice for your own flight; these numbers do not apply automatically to Air China, another Guangzhou carrier or another airport.
For a hypothetical 14:00 departure covered by that notice, the check-in cutoff is 13:20 and the gate cutoff is 13:45. Those are completion boundaries, not recommended airport-arrival times. Plan backwards for counter queues, document resolution, baggage, security and the walk to the gate. Our editorial fallback is to aim for the correct terminal about two hours before a straightforward domestic departure, with extra time for unresolved ticket issues or assistance; follow an earlier instruction from your airline.
Hainan’s deadline page labels its information reference-only, says local-airport information is final, and warns that a boarding card cannot be exchanged after the check-in deadline.[305] We did not retrieve its dynamic city rows and therefore do not use it to assert any other numerical cutoff. Online check-in, counter completion and gate closing are separate clocks.
5. At the airport, resolve the document and boarding pass before security
Carry your valid original passport and the saved booking details to the confirmed check-in counter. Hainan’s published guide accepts a passport for foreign travelers.[301] If the name or document record is wrong, ask staff and the ticket issuer to resolve it; this guide does not promise that the counter can repair every mismatch or issue a replacement ticket.
Even successful online check-in may leave an airport task: Hainan directs passengers needing a boarding-pass reprint or baggage check-in to its designated counter within the specified time. Air China also provides airport-counter printing when a boarding pass cannot be printed, and counter baggage check-in with valid identification.[302][303] Without a usable boarding credential or when the system requests document checks, ask staff rather than assuming a seat-selection screenshot will get you through security.
Check the printed or electronic pass for flight, date and destination, then check the airport displays for the current gate; Air China specifically warns that the gate and departure information may be updated after online check-in.[303] If time is short, approach airline staff immediately instead of staying in an unexplained queue. Before you go
- Confirm ticket issuance separately from online check-in access.
- Save the operator, flight number, booking reference and electronic-ticket number.
- Use accurate passport details; Hainan’s passport form is not a guarantee of online eligibility.[301][302]
- Confirm the operating airline’s actual counter, airport and terminal before leaving.
- Work back from your flight’s check-in and gate cutoffs, not a nationwide time allowance.[304][305]
- Bring the original passport and obtain a usable boarding pass; leave time for baggage and security.[301][302][303]
