Station delivery is not an immediate onboard meal: choose a serving station on your route and let railway staff bring the order to your seat. Onboard food is a separate option, available through the dining car or an onboard ordering service.[203] Check the cutoff shown for your actual meal order; do not turn an old one-hour rule into a nationwide guarantee. If the app is unusable, ask staff where to buy food in person.[201][204]
1. Decide whether you need food now or at a later station
A public discussion titled “Order food during a train trip” includes questions and replies about ordering from specific stations, closing times and seat delivery. We retrieved the search excerpt only, not the original thread; its advice is a demand signal, not a railway rule.[206] The practical distinction is between a meal already carried by your train and a restaurant order loaded at a selected stop.
CCTV’s August 2025 report describes both: onboard meals can be ordered through the railway QR service, while station specialties are loaded at the station you select.[203] If you need to eat soon, ask about onboard stock first. If a particular restaurant matters more, look ahead at eligible delivery stations before departure rather than waiting until hunger decides for you.
2. Choose the station before choosing the restaurant
The official 12306 catering website exposes separate fields for travel date, train number, boarding station and destination.[202] Shanghai’s government guide then describes choosing a pickup point, selecting food and entering personal information and the seat number.[201] A city with many restaurants is not proof that your train, travel segment and meal time have a matching delivery option.
Our recommendation: enter the exact journey, compare the stations actually offered and check that the delivery stop occurs while you are still onboard. Compare the proposed delivery time with when you want to eat. Do not select a later station merely because its menu looks better if you leave the train before it. Check the final total and any listed packaging or delivery charges before confirming; this guide does not establish a fixed delivery fee.
3. Make the seat and the meal order match
Shanghai’s guide explicitly asks for the seat number and describes scanning the railway QR code after boarding to reach food ordering.[201] The CCTV report uses the Dalian North–Harbin West G709 as an example of onboard meals brought to the seat, while warning that supplies differ between routes and trains.[203] Scanning a code therefore does not itself prove that you are buying a station restaurant meal.
Before payment, inspect whether the seller supplies the train itself or a selected station. Check date, train, carriage, seat and contact information against your journey. Save the order number and confirmation. Our advice is to tell staff if you have moved from the entered seat; do not assume the meal will follow an informal seat swap. No live account, foreign-phone acceptance or completed delivery was tested for this guide.
4. Read two deadlines: ordering and cancellation
An official-government travel guide warns that delivery takes at least one hour and recommends ordering ahead.[201] Separately, a January 11, 2018 radio report announced a change from 120 to 60 minutes for internet meal-order and cancellation cutoffs effective January 18 that year.[204] That is historical context, not verification of the deadline applied by every merchant in September 2026.
Use the actual station and order screen to identify the last ordering time and last cancellation time separately. For example, if your selected station’s screen says orders close at 11:20 and delivery is associated with a 12:20 stop, act before 11:20; those are illustrative times, not published service hours. If the cutoff has passed, check another suitable later station or switch to onboard food. Do not assume a late-running train automatically extends ordering.
5. A changed journey needs a separate meal-order check
A 2017 launch report describes reminders to cancel meals after ticket refunds, changes or destination changes, including instructions for counter customers to handle meal cancellation online.[205] Because this is historical reporting, it does not establish the current automatic-cancellation logic or refund amount. The safe practical conclusion is to inspect the meal order separately rather than treating a changed ticket as evidence that food has been cancelled.
Open the catering order, read the cancellation conditions and submit a cancellation while the option remains available. Save its resulting status. If cancellation is unavailable, contact the support channel shown on that order and ask whether it can still be stopped and what refund, if any, applies. Do not place a replacement meal until you understand the original order’s status; this guide promises neither a free cancellation nor an automatic transfer to a new train.
6. Keep a real no-app option, not another QR code
Shanghai’s government guide describes buying from the onboard trolley or visiting the dining car, following train signs or asking staff. It states that cash and electronic payment are accepted for on-site purchases.[201] A railway QR route can be convenient, but it is not a no-phone solution. The 12306 website is another digital interface, and seeing its form does not prove that you can complete its login.[202]
If you cannot use the app, ask a crew member where meals are sold and what remains available; carry some cash for an in-person purchase. If walking through the train is difficult, ask staff about help rather than assuming seat delivery without an online order is guaranteed. Our additional backup is to bring a ready-to-eat meal or snack before boarding. No source checked here guarantees a particular low-price meal, trolley frequency or unlimited stock.
7. At the delivery stop, stay with the railway handover
The CCTV account says the selected-station meal is brought aboard and staff deliver meals to passengers’ seats.[203] Plan around that handover, not a personal dash onto the platform. Our advice: stay onboard, keep your confirmation accessible and verify that the delivered bag matches your order before opening it.
If the expected stop has passed without delivery, show the order to the crew and contact the order’s support channel; keep screenshots and note the time. We have not verified a universal late-delivery compensation or refund policy. Before you go
- Check onboard food first if you need to eat soon.[203]
- Select a delivery station within your own travel segment.[201][202]
- Verify train, date, carriage, seat and the order confirmation.[201]
- Read the current order and cancellation cutoffs; do not rely on the historical one-hour rule.[204]
- After changing your journey, inspect and, if needed, cancel the meal separately.[205]
- Keep cash and a food backup; ask staff about the trolley or dining car.[201]
