China train ticket change or refund: what to do before and after departure

A practical decision guide for foreign passport holders when a China train plan changes: change the ticket, change the destination, or request a refund.

If your China train plan changes, first separate three actions: change the date or train, change the destination, or cancel for a refund. They are not interchangeable, and the answer changes once the scheduled departure time has passed.

Before departure: choose change or refund

If you still want to travel, use “endorsement” (ticket change) when seats are available. China Railway’s English FAQ says the service can change the date, train number, seat class and, in the permitted flow, the arrival station.[1] If you no longer need the journey, use the refund route instead. Do not wait for a train to depart just because a later decision feels easier: fees and available choices can change with time.[1]

The practical passport-holder route

Foreign passengers can buy real-name tickets with valid passports, and 12306’s English FAQ lists the English website and app as official channels.[1] Keep the passport used for the booking, order details and any reimbursement receipt together. A printed itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not itself a boarding ticket.[1] If a ticket was bought at a station counter, or a receipt was already printed, the station counter may be the safer route for the change or refund.[1]

After departure: do not assume a refund

China Railway’s current English FAQ distinguishes a post-departure change to a same-day train from a refund. It states that a same-day change may be possible when capacity exists, while an endorsed ticket cannot be refunded after departure.[1] Go to the ticket window at the station named on the ticket as soon as possible; staff must check the exact ticket state and available trains. This guide does not promise that every missed train can be recovered.

Change of destination is a separate decision

A destination change is not a general “edit anything” button. It requires capacity, has its own timing rules, and a destination-changed ticket cannot then be endorsed again.[1] Before choosing it, compare the new station with your hotel, airport or onward connection. If the original departure station is wrong, ask staff rather than assuming a destination change fixes the whole itinerary.

Five-minute checklist

1. Check the scheduled departure time and date. 2. Decide: still travel, change destination, or cancel. 3. Open the official 12306 booking record or go to a station counter. 4. Carry the same passport and order details. 5. Ask for the fee and refund route before confirming. 6. Keep any new ticket and receipt until the journey is complete.
