First establish that you are somewhere safe and have a workable place to stay tonight. Then check the train and the booking. A line appearing in a journey planner does not establish that it is operating, and repeated replacement purchases can create more uncertainty.
Separate three kinds of information
JR East’s English site provides route search, train-status information and ticket exchange/refund information as separate resources. It also states that the train-status screen does not update automatically.[6] A possible route, a currently operating service and the treatment of a ticket are different questions.
Record the operator, affected segment, train and notice time. Refresh the official status page before deciding. An old screenshot is not a live update, and a broad weather headline does not establish that every segment of your individual journey has stopped.
Safety and somewhere to stay come first
Follow station staff and local official instructions. If there is an immediate hazard, address personal safety rather than entering a restricted area to keep moving. A travel article cannot supersede evacuation or other on-site safety instructions.
If you cannot continue, establish somewhere you can wait or stay before optimising the cheapest detour. Agree on a clear meeting point with companions, taking account of children, older travellers and anyone needing assistance. Splitting the whole group between queues without a communication plan can make the situation harder to manage.
Keep a record before making changes
Save the original ticket, booking reference, payment receipt and operator notice. Record the departure, date, segment and any instructions received. The purpose is to explain the situation accurately to the seller, not to imply that keeping evidence guarantees compensation.
Distinguish a passenger-initiated cancellation from an operator cancellation. The actual process depends on the ticket, sales channel and rules. Do not cancel and repurchase merely to test what the system allows. If the booking is complex, return to the original seller and establish its status before creating another order.
Check the entire alternative journey
For a detour, verify operating status, availability, baggage suitability and the final connection to the accommodation. A line drawn in an app does not establish all four. Different transport options may be affected by the same weather, so switching mode is not automatically a safe or workable fallback.
Set a stopping condition: for example, no confirmed reception at the destination or an out-of-pocket cost you cannot accept. Choose that budget from your own circumstances rather than a number invented by this guide. Securing the night’s arrangements can be more useful than buying successive uncertain journeys.
Treat the contracts separately
JR East provides an entry point for ticket exchange and refund policies.[6] We have not reviewed your specific ticket or contract and do not promise that hotels, replacement transport or other expenses will be reimbursed by the railway.
Ask the ticket seller about the ticket, the property about a late arrival or change of stay, and your insurer about your own policy. Keep each response separately. One party agreeing to a refund does not cancel another contract. If you still intend to check in, notify the property early rather than assuming the disruption is already known to it.
Recheck even after services resume
When a resumption notice appears, match it to the actual segment and departure you need. Check seats, transfers, luggage arrangements and the new accommodation arrival time again. The itinerary and reservation saved before the disruption may no longer fit together.
This checklist is suitable for advance preparation, but is not a live alert service. Sources were reviewed on 20 September 2026. On the day, use the operating company and local official notices. The review date on this page is an editorial date, not the timestamp of a train-status update.
Before departure
- Refresh the actual operator status and note segment and time.
- Prioritise safety, companions and tonight’s arrangements.
- Save the original order; understand rules before cancelling.
- Verify the entire detour and avoid assumptions about compensation.
