On mainland China Railway services, a qualifying under-six travels free without a separate seat, but still needs a declaration using the child’s own valid identity document. One ticketed adult may accompany one such child. A separate seat requires a child discount ticket; a blank child field on a booking platform does not remove the declaration requirement.[101]
1. No free-child option? Separate payment from declaration
A parent publicly asked whether a four-year-old could travel when Trip.com offered no non-paying child option. That question is preserved in a search excerpt; we could not read the original thread, and do not adopt its replies as instructions.[103]
The decisive rule is Article 15 of the current China Railway regulations, effective June 1, 2026: declare a free child to the railway, and use the identity document recorded in that declaration as the child’s travel credential.[101]
Our advice: ask the seller whether it has actually completed the railway declaration, not merely noted that you have a child. If the answer is unclear, use the official channel below before boarding. “No fare payable” and “no passenger record needed” are different questions.
2. Use a declaration channel, not just a saved passenger profile
The official Shanghai government explainer documents two app steps: first add the child under My → Passengers → Add, entering the child’s name, document number and contact details; after buying the adult ticket, open Orders → Paid or My tickets, select the add prompt, choose the accompanying adult, then add the free child and confirm.[102]
These are published 2023 interface instructions, not a tested 2026 screen-by-screen walkthrough. Saving the child as a passenger is only the first step; the published procedure also links the child to the adult’s journey.[102]
The same official page explicitly says that if declaration was not made at purchase, it must be completed at a station ticket window before travel.[102] Our advice: if the app cannot display your third-party booking or accept the child’s passport details, bring the adult booking information and both passports to a staffed ticket window with time to resolve it. We have not verified automatic import of Trip.com orders or end-to-end foreign-passport app registration.
3. Declare the child’s passport, not the parent’s identity
Article 11 accepts foreign passports for station-window and 12306 purchases. Articles 20 and 24 require the free child’s declaration document to be presented and make it the child’s travel credential; the parent’s booking credential is not a substitute.[101]
For a paid child ticket, 12306 also explicitly requires the child’s own valid identity document.[104] Our advice: copy the child’s passport details carefully, carry that original valid passport, and check the child has been attached to the intended adult and train. A saved screenshot is useful for locating the booking, not a replacement for the required identity document.
Do not plan around a Chinese resident-ID temporary-document feature resolving a foreign child’s missing passport. We have not verified that route for foreign-passport holders; ask railway staff and the relevant passport authority before travel if the original document is unavailable.
4. Check eligibility before choosing declaration or a paid seat
Age is calculated on the travel date: under six may qualify for free travel without a separate seat; from the sixth birthday until before the fourteenth birthday a child discount ticket is required; from fourteen a full-price ticket is required. Each ticketed adult has only one free under-six allowance; additional under-sixes require child discount tickets.[101]
Thus one adult travelling with two four-year-olds needs at least one child discount ticket, even if the family hoped to share space. A single four-year-old who needs their own seat also needs a child discount ticket. These are applications of Article 15, not additional nationality-specific restrictions.[101]
For a paid ticket, match the accompanying adult’s travel date, train and seat class; the child’s destination cannot be farther than the adult’s.[101] Do not calculate every option as half of the adult checkout total: the current 12306 guidance differentiates ordinary high-speed seats, premium classes and sleepers, with minimum-fare conditions.[104] Our advice: request the actual child-ticket quote and verify an assigned seat when that is your purpose.
5. Recheck the link after changes and before entering the station
The published declaration guidance says cancelling the linked adult ticket also cancels the free child record, while changing the adult ticket carries the free child along with that passenger.[102] Our advice: inspect the resulting journey again after any change, especially if the accompanying adult changes or you later buy the child a seat.
For each journey, check three things separately: the adult’s valid ticket, the free-child declaration or paid child ticket, and the child’s matching original document. If declaration is unresolved, go to the ticket window before boarding rather than relying on an assumption that staff will overlook it.[101][102]
This guide addresses mainland domestic journeys within the current China Railway regulation’s scope, not urban metros or Hong Kong cross-border travel. It is desk research: no tickets were bought, no app workflow completed and no station acceptance tested. The current regulation determines eligibility; the older official explainer supplies a documented declaration route with its age clearly disclosed.
Before you go
- Calculate each child’s age on each travel date, and count one free under-six per ticketed adult.[101]
- Choose no separate seat plus declaration, or a paid child ticket when a seat is needed.[101]
- Use the child’s own passport details and carry the same valid original document.[101]
- Confirm the declaration is linked to the adult’s actual journey, not merely saved in a passenger list.[102]
- If the online declaration cannot be completed, use a station ticket window before travel.[102]
- After a change, recheck the adult-child link and the paid child’s seat assignment.
