China SIM with a foreign passport: do you need a local number or just data?

1. Separate three needs before buying

Write down what you actually need: mobile internet, messages to your existing number, and a mainland local number. They are different purchases. 3. Buying locally with a foreign passport

Shanghai’s official instructions are to visit a major carrier store, choose a package, show your passport, choose the physical SIM size, then purchase and register. 4. Online ordering still involves identity checks

Buying or receiving a card is not the same as completing activation.

5. Roaming and a travel eSIM solve different parts of the problem

6. Ask about the whole stay, then test before leaving

Request the total cost for your exact dates, not just a monthly headline price.
