Choose Shanghai Museum East for permanent collections and a general museum visit. Choose People’s Square specifically for On Top of the World Tree: Ancient Civilizations of the Americas: the museum says this is its only exhibition there from 9 July 2026 to 14 November 2027.[22] East currently does not require individual admission reservations; some interactive areas and ticketed exhibitions have separate arrangements.[21] For People’s Square, arrange your exhibition ticket first; the official guide directs overseas visitors to Trip.com.[22] Checked 22 September 2026; this is desk research, not an on-site test.
1. Choose the exhibition, not the more familiar building
If your aim is a broad introduction to the museum’s permanent collections, start with East. The official People’s Square guide explicitly directs visitors wanting permanent displays and other special exhibitions to East during the Americas exhibition period.[22] Do not assume the older downtown building still offers the same collection itinerary described in an old guidebook.
People’s Square is the deliberate choice if the Americas exhibition is what you want to see. Its stated run is 9 July 2026–14 November 2027, with no other exhibitions hosted in that building during the run.[22] Check the exhibition description and ticket conditions before committing; a convenient downtown location is not a substitute for matching the subject to your interests.
The confusion is real rather than a claimed search-volume trend: a public Reddit search excerpt asks which branch to choose and which has the Egypt exhibition.[24] A Tripadvisor review excerpt discusses passport-linked entry for that historical exhibition.[25] These are qualitative demand signals only. Neither establishes what is showing or how admission works today.
2. East: ordinary entry is not the same as every activity
The current East visitor guide says individual visitors do not need a reservation. It asks visitors to bring original valid identity documents and enter after security at the B1 East Gate near Dingxiang Road.[21] For a foreign visitor, prepare your original passport rather than relying on a photograph; the page uses the broad term ‘valid identity documents’ and does not document a foreign-passport scanner workflow.
The Curio-City and Digital Gallery still require advance reservations through the Special Reservation option on the East booking page. Ticketed special exhibitions have their own information and can be purchased online or at the Information Desk as stated in the official guide.[21] If an interactive session is unavailable, keep the permanent-collection visit as your fallback rather than treating the entire museum as sold out.
No reservation does not mean no queues: East may temporarily restrict entry to individual galleries when they reach capacity.[21] This advice is for individuals and small independent parties, not organised groups of 20 or more, for which separate advance telephone-booking rules apply.[21]
3. People’s Square: use the overseas booking route and bring the original document
The official guide offers advance tickets through the museum’s WeChat Mini Program and says overseas visitors can book through Trip.com. Entry is through the South Gate individual visitor passage after original valid identity documents are checked.[22] Trip.com is the external booking platform named by the museum; this Trip.io guide is not a booking confirmation.
Before payment, match the branch, exhibition name, visit date, session and each traveller’s identity details. Use the passport option if the live booking form offers it, and copy the details from the passport you will carry. These are preparation steps, not a claim that we tested the current checkout: this research did not verify live inventory, accepted foreign phone numbers, payment methods, refund rules or an exact passport-entry screen.
If WeChat is unusable, try the officially named overseas route rather than an unrelated reseller. If that also fails or the desired session is unavailable, contact museum visitor enquiries on 021-60226699 or choose another date.[22] Do not assume a failed online booking can be bypassed at the gate. East is a different-content fallback only if it is open and its collections suit your plans.
4. Save the full address and the individual entrance
East is at 1952 Century Avenue, Pudong New Area; ordinary individual entry is at the B1 East Gate near Dingxiang Road. The North Gate is the reserved-group entrance, with separate priority-access provisions.[21] In your map or taxi app, verify the street number and district, not just a result named ‘Shanghai Museum’.
People’s Square is at 201 Ren Min Da Dao, Huangpu District, with the South Entrance Gate on Wusheng Road.[22] Save both the building pin and entrance information. A ticket for one branch should never be treated as a reason to navigate to the other.
The official East route lists Metro Line 2 to Shanghai Technology Museum, Exit 8, among its options.[21] For People’s Square it lists Lines 1, 2 or 8 to People’s Square, Exit 1, or Line 14 to Dashijie, Exit 4.[22] Check live navigation for your starting point and service changes; this guide does not promise a transfer time between branches.
5. Different closing days—and an important last-entry trap
East’s regular hours are 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:00, closed Tuesdays except national holidays.[21] People’s Square’s current detailed visitor guide gives the day session as 09:00–17:00, last entry 15:00, closed Mondays except national holidays.[22] Do not copy East’s hours across to the downtown branch.
People’s Square also lists a day-and-evening arrangement of 09:00–21:00 with last entry at 19:00, but explicitly directs visitors to official announcements for evening sessions and changes.[22] Treat an evening opening as something to confirm for your date, not a nightly entitlement. Search cards and older summaries may show a different last-entry time; plan around the detailed branch guide and your dated ticket.
Our planning suggestion is to reserve a half-day for one branch and select a few priorities, rather than promising to see both comprehensively. This is an itinerary allowance, not an official visit duration. Before leaving the hotel, check the day’s opening notice, your ticket if applicable, and the correct entrance. If already at the wrong branch, recheck the other branch’s last entry and ticket validity before paying for a transfer.
6. Recheck before departure: what this guide can and cannot settle
The decisive branch split is tied to the stated Americas exhibition run, not a permanent promise about People’s Square.[22] For visits outside 9 July 2026–14 November 2027, rebuild the choice from the current exhibition programme. Even within that period, the museum may adjust admissions and announce changes.[21]
Bring the original passport, retain the ticket confirmation and save the destination address offline. If you need help with identity verification, ask staff rather than assuming a domestic ID reader will accept your document. This guide does not confirm a passport-photo substitute, guaranteed same-day ticket availability or access to every gallery.
