Reserve Tiananmen Square separately if visiting it is important to your day. The live platform requires real-name reservations, while a 2025 notice gives a one-to-seven-day advance window.[53][51] Older official rules allow valid Palace Museum reservations to substitute, but newer guidance does not clearly resolve that exception; do not assume it guarantees your entry.[52][51] A square reservation never replaces the palace booking.[52]
First decide which place you actually want to enter
Tiananmen Square is free to visit, but free admission is not the same as unrestricted entry: the live official reservation platform says the square uses real-name reservations and asks visitors to follow their reserved time slot and security checkpoint.[53] The Tiananmen Gate Tower is another destination; the same notice directs people wanting to visit it to the tower’s own official account.[53] Do not buy a vaguely labelled “Tiananmen ticket” before checking which place and service it covers.
Choose one of three plans: square only, Palace Museum only, or both. A square reservation does not replace a Palace Museum booking or the bookings required by other nearby institutions.[52] This guide handles the square-side decision, not Palace Museum ticket-release tactics. For both places, keep their confirmations separate and build your route around the more time-sensitive reservation.
Why a Forbidden City confirmation is not a safe universal answer
There is a genuine official-source complication. The committee’s 2021 trial rules say visitors with valid reservations for the Palace Museum and several other nearby institutions can enter the square without a separate square reservation.[52] That text remains publicly available; it is not merely a travel-blog claim. However, the committee’s 22 September 2025 service notice says individuals and groups must reserve the square one to seven days ahead and enter on their reserved date, time and entrance, in the context of National Day crowds.[51]
The newer notice does not explain whether it withdraws or preserves every older exemption. We therefore cannot turn the 2021 wording into a guaranteed September 2026 gate outcome, nor claim that an explicit universal revocation has been established. Our practical recommendation is to make a separate free square reservation if visiting the square matters to you. If you intend to rely on the older exception, obtain confirmation from the square authority for your actual date before relying on it.
Use the square’s channel and your own passport details
The official city visitor page lists the “Tiananmen Square Visit Reservation” WeChat mini program, Jingtong mini programs on WeChat, Alipay and Baidu, and the desktop reservation system among the square’s channels.[55] Begin with a link from the committee or city government rather than a sponsored booking result. The older official rules specifically allow foreign visitors to reserve with their entry passport or foreign residence document, supplying a name, identity-document number and mobile number.[52]
The committee’s step-by-step guide shows the sequence: choose “Individual Reservation” for an individual booking, read the notice, choose a date and session, enter the visitor details, review them and confirm submission.[56] The guide dates from 2022, so treat it as a label reference rather than a promise that today’s screen looks identical. Copy the passport details carefully, check every companion, and save the final reservation record. We did not log in or test overseas-number verification; an accepted document type does not prove that every foreign phone number works.
Book the right session, especially for the flag ceremony
The 2025 square notice gives a one-to-seven-day advance window.[51] The older trial rules instead describe a ten-day window, so do not plan around that older number without checking the current booking calendar.[52] For a practical visit, try inside the newer stated window and do not leave the first attempt until you are at the checkpoint.
The trial rules distinguish flag raising, morning, afternoon and flag lowering; morning runs after the raising ceremony until noon, while the raising session is separate.[52] If sunrise is your purpose, select the ceremony session actually offered for your date rather than assuming an ordinary morning record covers it. Check the date-specific ceremony information and the reservation’s instructions. We give no fixed dawn arrival time because a generic time is not a substitute for that day’s arrangements.
Choose the approach before joining a queue
The Palace Museum’s personal instructions explicitly distinguish palace-only visitors, who may approach Wumen via the east or west Tongzihe roads, from visitors booked for both the square and palace, who can approach through security checkpoints around the square.[54] They also describe south-to-north one-way movement from Tiananmen Gate Tower toward Wumen.[54] This means you should not assume that visiting the palace requires first sightseeing inside the square, or that reversing the same route will be available.
For square-only plans, follow the entrance stated on the square reservation. For both places, visit the square only if the route and timing leave room to reach your palace appointment. A museum time slot is not a promise about the square queue. Leave an uncommitted buffer and avoid scheduling a rigid taxi pickup or meal immediately after the square; this is planning advice, not a measured waiting-time estimate.
Prepare for document checks and security, not just booking
The live square platform requests cooperation with checks at the reserved checkpoint and recommends bringing no bag or fewer bags to improve passage.[53] Carry the physical passport used to book and keep the reservation accessible as a practical precaution. For the Palace Museum, the original document used for the reservation is explicitly required.[54] A saved confirmation is useful backup, not an automatic waiver of verification.
The square’s trial rules provide for staff assistance if an already-booked visitor has a verification problem or cannot use the phone-based process.[52] Ask staff to check the record rather than repeatedly submitting new bookings. That assistance is not evidence of guaranteed walk-in admission for an unbooked foreign visitor. The same rules warn that state or diplomatic events and associated controls can prevent visits.[52] Recheck official notices close to departure.
When the plan fails, preserve the part you can still use
If the square booking fails but your palace booking is confirmed, consider the palace-only approach described by the museum instead of spending the appointment window arguing at a square checkpoint.[54] If you only have a square reservation, do not treat it as a replacement for a sold-out palace visit.[52] If the booking form rejects your phone or document entry, ask your accommodation for help reading the official interface; do not enter somebody else’s identity as yours.
Keep a different activity available if the square reservation remains unresolved. This guide is desk research reviewed on 22 September 2026: we read the official notices and the public platform notice, but made no reservation and performed no passport or gate test. The unresolved older exemption is disclosed because a useful plan should survive that uncertainty, not conceal it.
