At the ticketing locations named on Nohi Bus's Shinhotaka route page, buy your ticket at the counter or machine before boarding; if those facilities are closed, the page allows payment on board. The operator's local-bus FAQ rejects onboard Suica, PASMO, credit-card and smartphone payments, while separately allowing certain counter card purchases and offering eligible mobile tickets. Payment, ticket purchase and seat reservation are different things.[15][16]
Start with the operator and route, not a nationwide rule
This guide covers daytime Nohi Bus journeys around Takayama, Hirayu Onsen and the Shinhotaka direction in Okuhida, Gifu Prefecture. It relies on the operator's English FAQ and Takayama/Hirayu–Shinhotaka Ropeway route page, checked on 20 September 2026. Neither displayed a clear publication or revision date in the retrieved body: the verification date is not an effective date. The route page contains operating periods, stop information and detour notices that need checking again for your travel date.[15][16]
Our advice: record the operator, line, boarding stop, destination, direction and date rather than simply writing 'bus to the hot springs'. This is a local boarding and payment guide, not advice for overnight coaches, every jointly operated vehicle or another company's services. The two checked pages do not establish one universal boarding door or numbered-ticket procedure. We therefore do not promise 'rear door in, front door out'. Read the actual vehicle signs and follow staff instructions instead of importing a rule learned in a different city.
Buy before joining the boarding queue at named ticketing points
The Shinhotaka route page tells passengers boarding at Takayama Nohi Bus Center, Hirayu Onsen, Akandana Parking Area, Honoki-daira or Shin-Hotaka Ropeway to purchase tickets at the counter or vending machine in advance. Its explicit exception is that passengers should pay on board when the counter or machine is closed.[16] This is a location-specific instruction, not evidence that every intermediate roadside stop has a ticket machine.
Our advice: distinguish the ticket-purchase queue from the boarding queue when you arrive. Show the exact destination stop to staff before buying, and keep the actual ticket accessible. A receipt, itinerary email or payment confirmation should not be assumed to be the document accepted for travel. Reassess the return journey separately: returning from a different stop can mean a different purchase arrangement, and buying an outbound ticket does not itself establish that the return is included. Here, 'in advance' means before boarding at those facilities; it should not automatically be interpreted as a requirement to book days earlier.
A loaded Suica is not an onboard payment plan here
Nohi Bus's FAQ lists cash, coupon tickets, commuter passes and applicable free passes as payment methods for local buses. It expressly excludes onboard smartphone payments, credit cards and transport IC cards such as Suica and PASMO. Separately, it lists ticketing facilities that accept credit cards, including Takayama Nohi Bus Center and Hirayu Bus Terminal, with a warning that some card brands may not be accepted.[15]
Our advice: separate 'buying a ticket by credit card at a counter' from 'paying the driver by credit card'. The first does not establish the second. If you start at an intermediate stop, the fact that a nearby shop accepts your card says nothing about the bus. Carry valid tickets or cash appropriate to the actual journey. Check the current official fare table or ask the counter about your exact stop pair; this article deliberately supplies no supposedly universal local fare and does not recycle an old social-media price.
Mobile tickets are different from scanning a phone to pay
Although the FAQ rejects onboard smartphone payments, it also says mobile tickets are available for the Shinhotaka and Norikura lines. It distinguishes products: combination tickets including bus fares and admission can be bought up to three months ahead, whereas standard one-way or round-trip mobile tickets are sold only on the day of travel.[15] 'No onboard QR payment' therefore does not mean that the operator never sells an electronic ticket.
Our advice: follow the operator's link and inspect the actual product's travel date, coverage and display instructions. A third-party booking screenshot is not automatically a usable mobile ticket. Keep the device charged and make sure you can open the ticket itself. The checked FAQ does not guarantee that every product works offline, accepts screenshots or permits several passengers to share one display. Nor should a destination appearing in a product name be treated as proof that every connecting bus or attraction is included. Confirm each component rather than filling gaps with assumptions.
Prepare small cash before leaving a service point
The FAQ says there are money-changing machines on board but that 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 yen banknotes cannot be exchanged.[15] Those numbers are denomination restrictions, not fares. Having sufficient total money in one large note does not establish that you can complete the onboard payment process.
Our advice: prepare coins and small banknotes before leaving a place with services, allowing separately for companions and the return journey. Read machine labels and ask the driver about changing money when the vehicle is stopped and you can do so without obstructing others. Do not assume the change slot and fare slot are interchangeable or that overpaying automatically produces change. The retrieved pages do not explain a single coin-insertion or change-return procedure for every vehicle, so this guide cannot guarantee one. If you cannot determine the amount, show your destination and ask before feeding coins into a machine.
At an intermediate stop, verify direction before boarding
The route page warns that map pins show approximate locations and that actual stops may differ slightly; passengers should check on site. Its Fukuji Onsen Guchi stop information distinguishes positions by direction and routing.[16] A single map pin is therefore not enough to establish that you are waiting on the correct side or at the correct pole.
Our advice: compare the accommodation's exact stop name with the route, then check the pole, direction and bus destination display. Wait in a safe place rather than crossing a road suddenly to catch a vehicle. On boarding, identify your destination and show any ticket or pass already held. Ask whether you need a numbered boarding slip. If staff or signs require one, retain it and follow the settlement instructions; that is a conditional response to the equipment you encounter, not a claim that every bus on this route uses such slips. If you miss a slip or cannot find your ticket, explain where you actually boarded rather than guessing a lower fare.
A purchased ticket is not a reserved seat
The FAQ says reservations are not available for the Shinhotaka line. For non-reserved services, boarding is first come, first served. Extra buses may operate during busy periods, but if those also fill, passengers may have to wait for the next service.[15] The route page additionally warns that road conditions, heavy snow and traffic in Takayama can cause significant delays.[16]
Our advice: keep 'valid ticket held' and 'able to board the intended departure' as separate checklist items. A mobile ticket does not automatically become a seat reservation. Check a usable return journey and a fallback before going out, rather than making the day's final return departure your only workable plan. Leave a buffer before a train, dinner reservation or accommodation arrival deadline. We have not checked live capacity for your date and cannot promise that an extra vehicle will be available. Avoid interpreting a timetable's arrival time as a guaranteed connection.
Make the final stop check about documents and bags
The route page places responsibility for baggage with the passenger and says the shared luggage compartment has limited space, so large items may not be accommodated. It also instructs passengers to keep mobile batteries inside the passenger cabin, within sight, and not in the luggage compartment.[16] Preparing to get off therefore includes more than finding enough coins.
Our advice: keep the destination name and ticket where you can reach them without unpacking a bag. If using a luggage compartment, explain your destination before loading and follow staff directions when retrieving your own item. Once the bus has stopped, complete the ticket presentation, surrender or cash settlement required on that vehicle. If the process differs from another city's bus, ask rather than insisting that payment must always happen either before or after travel. Repeat the stop, document and cash checks for the return: even within the same day, changing the boarding location can change what you need to prepare.
Before departure
- Identify the exact Nohi Bus line, direction, travel date and stop; do not apply this as a nationwide rule.
- Buy first at the ticketing points named by the route page; use its onboard-payment exception when facilities are closed.
- Distinguish counter card purchases, onboard payment and eligible mobile tickets; carry appropriate documents and cash.
- Do not rely on changing 2,000, 5,000 or 10,000 yen notes on board.
- Check the actual door, ticket and numbered-slip instructions rather than guessing from another city.
- A valid ticket is not a reserved seat: check return options, road notices and connection buffers.
