National Museum of China with a foreign passport: use the email route, then confirm entry

1. Change the booking route, not your identity

A public traveler question describes being unable to select a foreign passport during mini-program real-name verification despite already using the payment app successfully. We retrieved only the search excerpt; the original discussion was blocked, so its replies are not booking instructions.^[203] If this is your obstacle, do not select a residence permit or another document you do not hold simply to continue.

The museum’s English visitor page links directly to its English reservation system, whose instructions say visitors should use email.^[201][202] Open that official route before the release window and check whether you can sign in using an address you control. We reached the sign-in screen but did not request a code or inspect an authenticated passport form. Email guidance is evidence of a published route, not proof that every foreign passport or email provider completes verification.

2. Plan around the release and the newer reservation limits

The visitor guidelines effective August 1, 2025 allow reservations up to seven days ahead, with daily release at 17:00. Each account may reserve once per week for up to five people; one identity-document number is limited to one reservation per day and four per month.^[201] Use Beijing local time when setting your reminder, and prepare each traveler’s accurate document details before trying to book.

The same guidelines allow at most ten frequent contacts, which cannot be changed within thirty days after addition; children aged fourteen and under must be booked by an accompanying adult and enter with that person.^[201] Check the entire party before adding contacts. Do not build a multi-day museum plan around repeated reservations or casually test the system with incorrect identities.

The booking landing page still displays instructions effective September 25, 2023, with different quota and age wording.^[202] This guide uses the newer dated visitor guidelines for those rules, while retaining the booking page as the official email access route. If your live account behaves differently, ask the museum rather than treating either version as permission to bypass a restriction.

3. Choose a usable slot rather than relying on closing time

The newer guidelines list 09:00–11:00, 11:00–13:30 and 13:30–16:00 admission slots; from June 1 to October 31 the third slot extends to 16:30. Ordinary opening is 09:00–17:00 with last admission at 16:00; that peak season extends closing to 17:30 and last admission to 16:30. Mondays are closed except national public holidays.^[201] Recheck date-specific notices before arranging the rest of your day.

The older text on the reservation landing page still shows 17:00 closing and 16:00 last admission without the seasonal extension.^[202] Do not convert the later seasonal closing into permission to miss your chosen slot: the newer guidelines explicitly refuse entry to visitors who miss it.^[201] Choose a slot you can realistically reach with time for the approach and security, rather than chaining it tightly to another fixed appointment.

4. Separate a completed reservation from a failed attempt

After success, the museum says the system sends a confirmation message, which you must keep for verification.^[201] Our recommendation is to open the resulting reservation record and check every visitor, document, date and slot, then save the confirmation for offline reference. A sign-in, a completed challenge, or an attempted submission is not enough evidence to treat the visit as secured.

If identity selection, a verification challenge or availability prevents completion, record the exact error without publishing passport numbers. The official booking page displays service@chnmuseum.cn.^[202] Ask about your specific foreign-passport route, but do not assume a reply will obtain a sold-out place. Keep another activity available and do not travel to the entrance relying on an unconfirmed walk-in exception. This guide does not verify a same-day passport counter route or any intermediary’s guaranteed access.

5. Bring the matching original and handle changes before the deadline

The current visitor guidelines require the original identity document used for the reservation plus the confirmation message at the North Gate visitor entrance, within the booked slot; no reservation, mismatched identity details or a missed slot means no entry.^[201] For a booking made with your foreign passport, carry that original passport, not only a photograph. Follow current signs and staff directions at the museum. This guide concerns the National Museum of China, not the Palace Museum or a separate square visit.

Cancel by 15:00 on the visit day if you cannot attend. The newer guidelines say cancellation still counts toward the reservation limit, and three cumulative no-shows against one identity-document number cause a thirty-day reservation restriction.^[201] Do not assume canceling frees a weekly allowance for immediate rebooking. Use the original online channel, as the booking page instructs.^[202]
