For an ordinary mainland China Railway ticket, missing departure does not necessarily end your options: if you have not used the permitted change and capacity exists, apply before 24:00 on the original travel day. Changing to another train that day has no change fee; a later date within the advance-sale window attracts a change fee. Fare differences are separate. Ordinary refunds are not available after departure, and a ticket changed after departure cannot subsequently be refunded under the ordinary rules.[101]
1. Identify whether you are late or the railway is disrupted
A traveller publicly asked what to do after taking the subway in the wrong direction on the way to a Shanghai–Beijing train. The retrieved discussion includes a later report of changing travel plans when second class was unavailable.[102] That is evidence of a real recovery question, not a guarantee that another departure or affordable upgrade will exist for you.
Check the ticket’s departure station, date and departure time, then ask whether the train itself is delayed or cancelled. The ordinary refund rule requires action before the departure time printed on the ticket; after departure, ordinary refunds are excluded.[101] If you already know you cannot travel but that deadline has not passed, investigate a refund or change immediately rather than deliberately waiting to become a no-show.
This guide starts with an already-issued ticket and a missed departure. It does not repeat passport booking, verification or station-entry instructions. Its scope is domestic transport covered by China Railway’s regulations, not Hong Kong cross-border tickets or special pass products, which have separate rules.[101]
2. After departure, use the remaining change opportunity before midnight
Article 28 permits one change, subject to transport capacity. After departure, the application must be made before 24:00 that same day: another train on the original travel date has no change fee, while a train on a later date within the advance-sale period has a change fee. The regulations define time as Beijing time.[101] Midnight is an application boundary, not permission to wait until the next morning.
First compare a usable same-day departure with a later-date departure. If today’s remaining trains are full, do not assume the rules limit you to today; the later-date option is explicitly provided, but still depends on availability and completing the change that day.[101] Include accommodation and onward transport in your comparison rather than choosing a train solely to preserve ticket value.
Check whether the ticket has already been changed. The ordinary entitlement is one change, not one additional change after every missed departure.[101] If it has been used, or the day’s deadline has passed, ask staff about your actual ticket before budgeting on recovery; this guide establishes no general extra grace period.
3. Compare the full amount, and do not change merely to unlock a refund
A free same-day change means no change fee, not necessarily no payment. Article 31 requires payment of an increase in fare; for a cheaper replacement, the difference is returned with a refund fee charged on that difference.[101] An upgrade offered because second class is full can therefore cost money even when the change itself is free.
For a later-date replacement, ask for the fare difference and change fee separately before confirming. The regulation text reviewed establishes that the fee applies, but does not state its numerical tariff in Article 28; this guide does not invent a percentage or a live price.[101] Confirm the displayed total with the railway, and ask your seller separately about any intermediary charges.
Do not move the journey to tomorrow intending to cancel it afterward: Article 46 excludes both tickets after departure and tickets changed after departure from ordinary refunds.[101] Choose a replacement you genuinely intend to use. If no workable service exists, establish the cost of a new journey without assuming the unused original fare will come back.
4. Use a channel that can actually complete the change
Article 29 allows changes at station ticket counters, through 12306 and at machines equipped for changes. Tickets purchased with the accepted identity documents can be changed at a counter; cash-paid tickets must use the counter. Online changes are available for tickets bought using documents accepted by 12306 and electronic payment, subject to the applicable requirements.[101] This does not establish that every third-party order will be visible in your own account.
If an app cannot find the order or offers no change option, go to a station ticket counter rather than spending the remaining deadline repeatedly refreshing it. At the counter, the traveller must show the valid identity document used for purchase; a representative must also show their own valid identity document.[101] Keep the order details ready to help staff identify the journey.
Ask staff to compare a same-day change and a later-date change, and to explain any remaining restriction on your ticket. Before accepting, check the replacement date, train, station, class and total charge. Confirm that the change is completed, not just requested. These are practical checks, not a tested app walkthrough or a promise of service in a particular language.
5. Take railway delays and cancellations down the separate refund route
If the booked train itself is delayed and you have not travelled, Article 51 allows a full refund without a refund fee before its actual departure from your ticket’s boarding station. Eligible connecting tickets purchased before the delay was announced can be refunded together without a refund fee; treating them separately invokes the ordinary provisions.[101] Show all affected tickets and the disruption information before choosing separate cancellations.
For a cancelled train, Article 52 allows a fee-free refund from the cancellation announcement until within 30 days after the ticket’s travel date. Eligible connecting tickets bought before the cancellation announcement can be refunded together before the connecting train departs.[101] This is an application window, not a statement that every seller automatically returns money. A delayed flight, wrong-direction subway ride or road traffic should not simply be labelled a railway-caused disruption.
Sources reviewed September 23, 2026: the official regulation states an effective date of June 1, 2026; the public discussion is used only to establish the practical question.[101][102] Exact change-fee tariffs, live seats, station-counter hours and individual account behaviour were not verified. We made no booking or refund and conducted no station test; ask 12306 or station staff about your actual ticket and any temporary arrangements. The regulations permit temporary changes to change and refund procedures.[101]
Before you go
- Distinguish your own lateness from a delayed or cancelled train.
- Record the original travel date and the before-24:00 Beijing-time change deadline.[101]
- Check whether the one permitted change has already been used.[101]
- Compare same-day and later-date availability, fare differences and fees.
- Do not expect an ordinary refund after changing a ticket after departure.[101]
- If the app cannot complete the change, take the purchase identity document and order details to a ticket counter.
- For railway disruption, present affected connecting tickets together before cancelling them separately.
